Event: 1917 - The Year of Revolution
Hear the glory and tragedy of Mother Russia in one evening of great music marking the centenary of the 1917 Revolution.
Tchaikovsky’s mighty 1812 Overture, commemorating the French army’s retreat from Moscow in the Napoleonic Wars, has always been a showpiece, and we will have a cohort of celebrity guest bass drummers to replicate the famous cannon fire.
In contrast, Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Violin Concerto in D was written during a personal crisis. Callum Smart, one of music’s brightest young talents, will be joining us.
Despite having endured a difficult, even dangerous, relationship with the communist government, Shostakovich wrote his 12th Symphony in celebration of Lenin leading the Bolsheviks to power.
